Meaning Of Leadership
One of the most discussed topics in the world is leadership,
and there are tons of people wanting to give out tips and
pointers about what true leadership is. But even then, there
are some things about leadership that need to be implemented
in greater understanding. Here are some of these ideas that
are not much talked about:-
There are different brands of leadership.
Leaders come in many colors. First, there are the official
leaders who are elected by people to rule them. They fill our
political offices and the local clubs. Then there are the
unofficial leaders who are a kind of inspiration to us. These
could be anyone like a grandfather of a family, or a principal
of a school. Then there are the leaders who have proved their
expertise to the world in some way or the other. Like, Charles
Darwin could be truly called as a leader on the subject of
Evolution. The thing to note is that all the official and
unofficial leaders can be classified on the basis of the
qualities they possess:-
Basic Leadership Styles according to Lewin – These are
authoritative, participative and entrusting
Basic Leadership Styles according to Linkert – These are
oppressive authoritative, generous authoritative, consultative
and participative.
Emotional Leadership Styles according to Goleman – These are
futurist, tutor, associative, democratic, trendsetting and
authoritative.
No one is a born leader.
Some people do believe that leadership qualities are inborn,
but the real fact of the matter is that even if a person will
have some inherent leadership qualities, without the proper
environment and setting, he or she will not be able to become
a leader. Hence, leadership could be considered as acquired
training. You can learn about leadership through seminars,
workshops and meetings. Even when you are just meeting up with
people socially, you could learn some leadership tricks.
Leadership training is a blend of formal and informal
training. And as you learn, you will begin to understand more
aspects about leadership, and will learn how to assimilate
them into your lives. Also, learning about leadership is a
process that goes on for your entire life.
You have to make the start if you want to become a leader.
The best manner in which leadership can be developed is if you
begin applying principles to your lives. Your actions are more
important, and they are what will keep you in the center of
attention. If you want to be credible as a leader, then your
actions need to speak out for themselves. Every action is
important – the way you treat your family, friends and people
working with you, the way you handle your responsibilities,
the way you converse with people, everything! Your actions are
the means through which people will typify you as a leader.
Read good books on how you can improve your leadership acumen.
Leadership is a combined effort.
Leadership never belongs to a single person, but it always
needs some or the other form of teamwork. A leader is a person
within a group, a group that has some definite obligations to
perform. The obligations of the leader are just a little more
than what the rest of the group has to perform. And a leader
is a failure if the rest of the group does not perform their
duties either. These things require a great level of trust
between the members of the team and progress based on actions
and not just preaching. And just as the team members are
expected to respect the leader, the leader must also respect
the team members.
Leadership is subject to situations in life.
Just like political leadership is different in different
countries of the world, even personal leadership is. It is not
just about the political scenario of a country; but it is also
about the situation that a person faces at that stage in life.
There is no hard-set rule for leadership. Even a single leader
will have to employ several different methods. Just as an
example, when an emergency situation arises, the leader will
have to make some quick and drastic decisions. At such times,
the leader will, and is expected to, take advice from the rest
of the team. In this manner, the leader is quite participative
in what he or she does. If the rest of the team is not able to
provide good support to the leader, there is a high chance
that the leadership might fail.
These are some points that should help you get on the right
track if you are all set to become a leader. Pay heed to them
and see your leadership blossoming.
