The Quest for
True Happiness
Living is not always easy; in fact, sometimes, we find life is
just too burdensome to carry on. We do see people all around
us who seem to have lived excellent lives, and we do wonder
about how they managed to do that. We do think that they had
everything on a platter for them. We do think that they were
always happy all the time. And we do think that they never had
any stress in their lives to talk about. But then, if true
realization ever strikes you, you will figure out that these
happy people have become happy not due to external
circumstances, but because they worked mightily on improving
their own selves.
It is very apt to say that if you want to get the real
happiness in life, you will have to begin by improving your
own self.
Experts often say that when you accept someone, it means that
you love that person. So, if you accept yourself first, you
are creating love there. There is no way you can be perfect.
Once you come to terms with that and accept yourself with all
the imperfections that abound in you, you are beginning to
improve your own self.
Contentment, i.e. satisfaction also forms a very major portion
of your happiness. You will have to learn to be satisfied with
the various situations you are in, and that would include the
family you live in, your circle of friends, your home, your
city, your car, your workplace, the things you own, etc. You
will then begin to understand that you are getting some real
happiness in your life.
Yes, it is all about making a start. When you learn this, you
will see how things begin to fall into place. You will surely
come to the stage where you can call yourself contented. And
this leads to the stage where you can call yourself truly
happy.
The right approach towards life is to understand that living
is an eternal quest of finding out what is correct and what is
not, of attempting various things and succeeding and failing
at them. These are common occurrences in your life. If you do
not have defeats in life, you have probably not learnt
anything. You will fail. But that should not pull you down in
the pits.
Despite all this, you can be happy. One of the best ways to
remain happy is to make efforts in doing things. So, when you
are doing the chores around your house, you are in fact
finding some of your own happiness. Doesn't matter what the
chores are – they could be sweeping around your house, tending
to a sick child in the house or even completing a school
assignment.
Life has a scoreboard of its own. You are given a good score
when you take your life forward, and given minus points for
each step you take backwards. The main thing is to look at
this scoreboard each day and understand that you are
progressing. If you show a decline, try to understand why that
happened, and improve.
Happiness does not, and never has, rested itself in material
things. Happiness is not about winning the best garden in the
neighborhood award or about owning the jazziest music system
in your snazzy car. It is not about achieving your monthly
sales also. Happiness is not doled out just to the strongest,
the bravest and the cleverest among us. It is for everyone.
And the fun is, everyone has to fathom what personal meaning
happiness has for them.
A player might think about happiness as winning a gold medal
in the Olympics, a writer may feel happiness is about getting
a place on the bookstore racks, a pauper might feel happiness
is about a decent meal in a decent restaurant. A
businessperson might not think of anything except a doubling
of profits from last year as happiness. Then where is the real
happiness? I would hazard to say that happiness is not about
acquiring things. It is about the process and not the product.
If you have put in your best efforts at things, you are
getting your happiness. If you are falling down, but then
getting up, then you are getting happiness. If you are
promising yourself that you will better yourself tomorrow, you
are getting happiness. And that happiness is genuine happiness
that won't dwindle.
Happiness also lies in understanding your limitations and in
realizing where you have erred. When you do that, you are in
fact bringing a very strong sense of happiness for yourself.
When you learn to love others, you are getting immense
happiness too. And that is happiness which will remain with
you for a lifetime.
Some people do strongly believe that smiling and laughing are
the best tools for getting happiness. However, I would say if
you are able to laugh at yourself, you are the happiest person
on earth. Laughing over yourself makes you liberated. A
liberated person is always a happy person. A genuinely happy
person.
