The Many
Benefits of Meditation
Meditation simply refers to the state where you are bringing
your physical and spiritual being into proper focus and
helping them to relax. When you meditate, you become more
aware of the things around you, you can concentrate better on
things, and generally you get a positive attitude in life.
It is wrong to think that only mendicants, monks and Indian
sadhus perform meditation, though they may be called the
progenitors of the art. However, anyone can try and achieve
the many benefits of meditation. Also, it is not necessary to
go to some remote and secluded place to get the benefits of
it. If you need, you can even meditate right there on you
patio!
There are many different forms of medication, but at the core
their principle is the same. The main purpose is always to
eliminate some negative and straying thought from your mind
and creating in it a purposeful sense of concentration. When
this is achieved, the useless fragments from the mind clear
away, and it gets geared up for some well-focused constructive
activity.
Negative thoughts can come from a variety of things – an
imposing partner, neighbors that quarrel, a stupid parking
ticket, even an email that should not have come to you! All
these negative thoughts adulterate your mind and close it down
on constructive thought. The result is that you cannot
concentrate on the more positive thoughts that you should.
Some hardcore meditation experts can event shunt out their
sensory receptions, like those of the eye, ear and touch, when
they are meditating. The basic idea is to move far away from
anything that connects them to the earth. If you train
yourself to achieve this, you will find yourself truly
entering into the depths of meditation. You might find it very
difficult to close out all your thoughts and just focus on a
single idea at first, but soon you shall see that it is quite
possible.
Some of the people who watch television programs for
meditation are intimidated by the poses those experts assume
when they are meditating. Those contortions might simply seem
impossible! But it is not true that meditation needs such
demanding poses to be effective. You can meditate in whatever
pose you find comfortable for you. You might prefer sitting
down, standing or even simply walking on the street. You can
find your own meditation technique wherever you are and in
whatever you are doing.
The basic aim is that the meditating position must allow you
to lose your muscles and tissues. That would be an effective
point to start your meditation. Try to keep your posture
healthy, like a straight back at least. But be very careful to
keep your mind alert and active even when you are meditating.
That means, it is a great fallacy to slouch or to doze off
when you are meditating.
You can be aided in your quest for right meditation by the
clothes you wear. Try to wear loose fitting clothes that will
help your body breathe and be flexible when meditating.
Refrain from tight fitting clothes, because they will not set
your mind at its greatest degree of comfort.
Next important thing is the place where you set up your
meditative pose. You can do it wherever you want – in your
dining room, in your kitchen, in your bedroom or in your
living room – but make sure that that place has a relaxing
atmosphere. You must use an exercising mat if you want to try
out some of the more daring positions of meditation. They can
provide you some safety in case of injuries. Before you start
meditating, take some time to assure yourself that the place
where you are meditating is relaxing and soothing enough for
the activity.
One of things you must look out for in the place you are going
to meditate is tranquility and peace. There should be no
noises there that would break you in your concentration. Keep
the mobile phones switched off. Also, be careful of stenches
and foul odors. These are also retardants in meditation. In
fact, you can put on some pleasing air freshener to help in
the meditation. Use aromatic candles for effect.
If you are into mysticism and want to go all the way, then it
won't harm to learn some of the mantras that the sadhus use
while assuming their meditative poses. Mantras hold special
religious and comforting values for them. If you are not much
inclined to chant the mantras when you are meditating, you
might try to focus on other things you can do, such as humming
out sounds when meditating, practicing some accompanying
breathing exercises, etc.
Remember that the main purpose of meditation is to focus the
mind. You have to learn to focus the mind on a particular
idea, or a particular thought. And you must be able to achieve
this with your eyes open or closed, when you are looking at
nothing, or when you are staring fixedly at a particular
object.
Some people adopt some tricks to aid them in meditation. A
common ploy is to remember the different parts of the body and
speak out their names softly to yourself. For example, say
'hands' and then concentrate on your hands. You will actually
feel the tension from your hands numbing away. Do this with
every part of your body.
There are no risks in meditation, and the benefits are many.
Even the medical field accepts the benefits of meditation. It
is high time you began looking upon meditation as a serious
therapeutic activity rather than just something from the
Eastern Mysticism.
